About the inventor

Ivor Awty was raised on a dairy farm in Gippsland, Victoria and ended up working in the mining industry where he became familiar with the use of sonar (sound) to measure the height (quantity) of materials in heavily mechanized storage bunkers. During his mining career he was instrumental in developing conveyor relocation methods, improved cleaning equipment design and provided training for various mining operations. He became very familiar with mechanical and electronics uses in a very harsh environment. When he returned to the dairy industry to manage 10 research herds and respective farms for the Department of Primary Industries during 1996 to 2001, he found that by accurately measuring pasture Dry Matter (DM) being allocated to dairy cows and only adding supplements in amounts to meet production requirements, that an 80% pasture utilization was easily achievable even at low stocking rates. The problem was that consistent and accurate pasture estimation required the same person to estimate the DM on offer. Ivor has used his knowledge of mining technology and dairy farm management to invent an automatic device that measures average pasture height that seems to be equally as accurate to other devices which are mostly hand held and/or cannot be incorporated into every day activities. This automatic ability to measure pasture has taken the human guesstimate out of pasture estimation.
